Daryl's Author Visits program "A Writer's Journey" is an amazing mix of music, storytelling and graphics all weaved together to teach children about the creative writing process. Daryl combines music and graphics to teach kids how to collect detail. He uses storytelling and graphics to teach them about using small moments and creating conflict. Daryl will take the kids on a journey that is so much fun, that the kids won't realize until it's over, that the whole assembly was one giant writing class.
Daryl's author visits program "A Writer's Journey" is arranged in 3 different ways and then adjusted to fit the audience attending."

Daryl's use of humor and creative arts (live performance, storytelling, music, reader's theatre, live action readings and interactive activities) to teach and entertain is amazing to watch and ties into the show's powerful literacy message, which is designed to help reinforce your school's writing curriculum.
All "A Writer's Journey" author visits assemblies grades 3rd -8th include writing topics. Some topics include:

"(Mr. Cobb) subtly wove powerful messages about the importance of reading, imagination, and kindness into his performance.
For the older grades (3-5), Mr. Cobb's performance was a dynamic blend of storytelling, music, and audience participation. He brought his characters to life with expressive voices and hilarious antics, drawing the kids into the narrative with questions, games, and even a bit of reader's theater. His infectious enthusiasm was impossible to resist, and soon the entire auditorium was echoing with laughter and cheers."
The day usually starts with song: As the students enter, they will find Daryl playing the guitar and singing.
(Music is adjusted to suit grade level attending.)
Assembly coordinators, as you look at the information on this page, including the posted video segments, keep in mind that I adjust my shows based on the grade levels that are attending the program and the time in which I have to present it. New this year for 4th-8th grades is a live performance from (Chapter 10, Diplomacy) my children's novel Baseball, Bullies & Angels.
Each age group has different needs so,
these adjustments are made:
Daryl's author visits skit, "The Cookie Caper" is a live action (No Pencils, No Paper) writer's exercise that is meant to teach the students about conflict, the proper way to solve the conflict and the importance of thinking out the process.
How does it work? Daryl tells the kids a story using one of the students as an actor. But instead of bringing the story to a conclusion Daryl stops, leaving the story open ended for the students to finish.
How is the audience involved? The students will give Daryl suggestions as how to finish the story. Daryl will then analyze their solutions one by one and ask the audience questions that pertain to each solution, in order to see if their ideas will actually work in the story.
Daryl Cobb performs "The Cookie Caper."
What do they learn from this exercise?
